Poverty Alleviation and the Attainment of the MDGs
Concepcion,
Iloilo, Philippines. For it's “Zero Poverty 2020” and “Harnessing Synergy in Integrated
Population, Health and Environment Programming,” which helped in halving
poverty incidence in the locality in a frame of four years.
Malalag,
Davao del Sur, Philippines. For its “Social Reform Agenda-Minimum Basic Needs” (SRA-MBN) program which
addressed poverty by means of increasing monthly household income through its
livelihood programs, reducing unemployment rate, provision of resettlement
sites for socialized housing, improvement in maternal and child health care
services, and provision of mechanisms for safe drinking water.
Naga City,
Philippines. For its programs that promote
both economic and sustainable developments, participatory governance, people
empowerment and transparency, resolution of urban poor issues, access to
quality education, technological enhancement, disaster preparedness, “cyber
governance,” and the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Pasay
City, Philippines. For its innovative efforts to localize the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs) at the family level and its quick solutions to address poverty
issues in each barangays, and its Bayanihan Banking Program (BBP) which helps
raise incomes and living standards among the urban poor.
Zamboanga
City, Philippines. For the cooperation of the city government, a non-government
organization, and the city’s multi-sectoral council towards an AIDS-free
Zamboanga City and for the city government’s efforts to attain the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs) through its programs on health, gender equality,
education, and environmental protection.
Douala, Cameroon: the
Saint Nicodemus chain of homes. Prompted by the goal to fight poverty
among street children in the streets of Douala by housing, educating, and
providing them with material support.
Ahmedabad, India: Ahmedabad Slum
Networking Programme. An infrastructure and service provision
programme, made possible through a partnership between Ahmedabad Municipal
Corporation (AMC), non-government organizations (NGOs) and communities, to help
improve the livelihoods of people living and working in the Ahmedabad slum
area.
Neiva, Colombia:
Neiva’s Commune 10, Urban Management and Participative Governance. Improvement of
the living conditions of the people in the Commune 10 slum through people and
community organizations’ participation in planning and implementing development
programs. Social and public services were made available and accessible to the people
of Commune 10, thus giving them a sense of comfort, security, and ownership.
Canada: TliCho
Community Services Agency. An organization
responsible for the delivery of education, health and child and family programs
and services in the Tåîchô region.
Muñoz,
Nueva Ecija, Philippines. For its
“Moving Onwards to Muñoz Agricultural Science City” program (1992), “Acquisition
of a Complete Equipment Pool” which enabled the city for infrastructure
development, “Developing the Matingkis Farm-Tourism,” which resulted in the
Matingkis water reservoir that helps for the people’s (farmers) livelihood, and
continued efforts to attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Philippines: Gawad Kalinga. Initiated by the Couples for Christ in 2001, the Gawad Kalinga aims to reduce,
and consequently eliminate, poverty in the country. Its activities include the
provision of housing to low-income families (known as GK Villages), youth
empowerment and development, community empowerment, and improvement of health
and environment, among others.
South Africa: Phelophepa Health Care Train. For its efforts to bring social and health services to the rural parts of South Africa through a mobile train equipped with health facilities.
Washington: Quil Ceda Village. For the Tulalip Tribes’ demonstration of a successful economic development through attracting business, provision of employment opportunities to its people, at the same time advancing tribal environmental and cultural values.
